Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security

On March 13, 2024, the Varembé Conference Center in Geneva hosted an inspiring conference-debate on UN Resolution 1325, highlighting the crucial role of women in peacebuilding in Africa. This event, organized alongside the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, brought together renowned speakers, civil society actors, and engaged participants to discuss a critical theme: the involvement of women in peace and security processes.

During the discussions, the speakers addressed the challenges related to implementing Resolution 1325, including cultural barriers, political instability, and the lack of effective monitoring mechanisms. Key points emphasized by the panelists included the importance of strengthened partnerships between governments, international organizations, and civil society to ensure the meaningful participation of women in peace negotiations and post-conflict reconstruction.

The discussions also highlighted concrete experiences and best practices. Ms. Aicha DUIHI, President of IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO, stressed the role of women as pillars of sustainable change. Ms. Ndaté DIENG, Vice President of the Geneva Foundation for the African Peace Conference, and Ms. Naima KORCHI, President of the Africa Women’s Forum, shared local and international initiatives aimed at empowering women in conflict zones.

This event reaffirmed that Resolution 1325, adopted in 2000, remains a strategic and essential tool for promoting equality and ensuring that women play a central role in conflict prevention, mediation, and reconciliation. However, it also served as a reminder that additional efforts are needed to address persistent challenges.

IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO warmly thanks all participants and speakers for their valuable contributions. Together, we celebrated the successes of African women as leaders and drivers of peace while reflecting on ways to sustain this momentum. Let us continue working toward a sustainable peace where women are fully recognized and involved.
