The International Observatory for Peace, Democracy, and Human Rights in Geneva (IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO)had the honor of participating as a partner in the international seminar held in Rabat on the theme: "South-South Cooperation: Empowering and Protecting Girls' Rights as a Lever for Africa’s Development."

This event, held on October 26, 2024, at the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco, brought together experts, policymakers, and civil society actors to discuss a critical issue for Africa’s development: promoting girls’ rights and empowerment as the foundation of a fair and sustainable future.

Context and Key Issues Addressed

The seminar highlighted alarming statistics on the inequalities young girls face in Africa, including:

  • Educational Inequality: 132 million girls aged 6 to 17 worldwide are deprived of schooling, with a significant portion in Africa.

  • Gender-Based Violence: One in ten girls under 20 has faced sexual violence, exacerbated by armed conflicts and climate crises.

  • Economic and Climate Challenges: Women’s limited access to land and economic resources hinders their contribution to development. Climate change further increases their vulnerability.

IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO's Commitment

As a partner in this event, IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO contributed by sharing its expertise on strengthening young girls' rights in Africa, emphasizing:

  • The need for an integrated approach combining education, health, and economic empowerment.

  • The importance of South-South cooperation as a key driver for accelerating progress and promoting solutions tailored to local realities.

  • The implementation of gender-sensitive policies in climate resilience, humanitarian crisis management, and sustainable development.

Perspectives

IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO reaffirms its commitment to working alongside stakeholders to promote girls’ empowerment and protect their rights. These efforts are essential in building a future where every girl can realize her potential and actively contribute to the development of her community and country.
