Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) is a body of independent experts responsible for monitoring the implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The Convention aims to prevent and prohibit enforced disappearances, punish those responsible and protect the rights of victims and their families.

The 27th session was held from 23 September to 4 October 2024 at the Palais Wilson, Geneva. IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO, as a Geneva-based non-governmental organisation committed to human rights issues, took part in this event in various ways.

Contributions from IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO

Oral contribution :

On Friday 16 August 2024, the IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO team sent an official request to the ERC secretariat (at ohchr-ced@un.org) to intervene on cases relating to Morocco.

Written contribution :

On Tuesday 21 August 2024, a bilingual report (French and English) concerning the situation of enforced disappearances in Morocco was submitted to the Committee's secretariat.

Participation in sessions and interventions:

1. Civil society briefings :

Members of civil society, including IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO, took part in the briefing sessions on 24 September 2024 :

Morning: 8.45am to 9.45am;

Afternoon: 1:30 pm to 2:45 pm

2. Oral presentation :

IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO presented its oral intervention on enforced disappearances in Morocco during a specific session;

This presentation highlighted concerns about victims' rights and state responsibilities.

Conclusion

IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO's participation in the 27th session of the Committee on Enforced Disappearances reinforced the importance of mobilising civil society in the fight against enforced disappearances. The NGO's written and oral contributions were opportunities to plead for better protection of victims' rights and greater accountability on the part of States.
