Conference on the Right to Development and Stability in the Maghreb and the Sahel

Right to Development and Stability in the Maghreb and Sahel

On March 1, 2024, on the sidelines of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, we organized a side event, in partnership with PDES-NGO with ECOSOC status, focused on the challenges related to the right to development and stability in the Maghreb and Sahel regions. This meeting, held in Room XXV of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, brought together experts to address vital issues related to security, poverty, and human rights.

At the heart of the discussions: disparities in democratic processes, the impact of armed groups, and the interdependence between security and development. The panelists emphasized the urgency of implementing inclusive and sustainable policies to address the multiple regional challenges, while calling for increased international cooperation to promote stability.

The recommendations from this meeting highlight the importance of investing in social and economic infrastructure, strengthening governance mechanisms, and integrating security into development strategies. These elements are essential to ensure a better future in these regions facing complex crises.

A global issue for local solutions: Discussions highlighted that the right to development and stability is not just regional objectives but global priorities. The challenges in the Maghreb and Sahel directly affect international dynamics, whether through migration, terrorism, or climate change.

The IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO warmly thanks our brilliant panelists, including Ms. Awa N’DIAYE, Mr. El Habib BELKOUCHE, and Mr. Souhail BELHADJ KLAZ, for their insightful analyses.

Together, we must continue this momentum of reflection and action to build a future where peace and sustainable development go hand in hand.
